1) Using the PrtScn/PrtScn Key on the Keypad:
As we mentioned above, this is the most common and well-practiced method of taking screenshots. It is useful and can work on all versions. The keypad of your laptop has the PrtSc button on it. You have to press the button or press Ctrl+PrtSc combo keys. Windows will create a screenshot of your current full screen.
It will be saved to the clipboard. After this, you can open any program such as MS Paint which can edit images. What you have to do it is to just ‘Paste’ the image there and save it as a file there. You can later open the file and use it as you want.
2) Using the Alt key for the Active Window:
The screenshot of the currently active window can be taken using the Alt button on the keypad with a combination of the PrtSc button. You just have to open the window of which you wish to take a screenshot and then press Alt+PrtSc buttons. As in the previous method, this screenshot captured too, will be saved to clipboard. You can later save it by opening any photo editing software, pasting it there, and saving the file at your desired location in the hard drive.
3) Use of Windows Key and Automatically Saving the Screenshots:
If you don’t want to follow the methods mentioned above and don’t want to use any other software to save the images, here is another way of capturing screenshots. You can do it by pressing the Windows button and PrtSc button on the keypads together.
The screenshot is captured but you don’t have to open a photo editor and save it there. Instead, it will be automatically named as Screenshot.png, numbered in sequence, and saved to ‘Screenshots’ folder in the ‘Pictures’. This is the default in-built picture library folder in Windows.
Note: Windows always takes a copy of the screenshot file in the clipboard. So, you can save this copy of the same screenshot with another name and edit it after pasting it in any photo editing tool you want.

If you have a laptop having ‘Fn’ key on its keypad, you should try the combos mentioned below:
Fn+Windows+PrtScn :
It can be used to capture the whole screen and automatically save the screenshot to the Windows default picture library.
Fn+Alt+PrtScn :
It can be used for capturing the screenshot of the currently active window.
Fn+PrtSc :
This is useful when you want to edit the screenshot before saving it. This key combination will take a screenshot of the full screen of your laptop and copy it to the clipboard. Later you can paste it in any photo editing software and edit it as you wish. Then you can save it with a particular name and at your desired location on the hard drive.
Capturing Screenshots on Windows 10 (Only)
In this method, you can have the screenshot of a particular part of your laptop screen captured. The combination of keys to be used is Windows+Shift+S.
- You have to press the Windows+Shift+S keys together.
- When you will use the combination, your screen is seen dimmed with a cursor on it.
- Using this cursor by mouse or your finger, if you have the touchscreen, you can draw out a region on the screen of which you intend to take a screenshot.
- The screenshot of the particular region you have drawn will be saved to the clipboard. You will then have to save it in any photo editing tool like ‘Paint’. Before saving it there, you are free to make changes in it by editing options in your photo editor tool.
